Cast Update: San Francisco Production

Cristy Candler (former Nessarose) is currently with the cast as Witch's Mother; she is printed in the playbills and is performing but is not listed on the website; it is unclear how permanent this is.

Stephanie Torns to join Broadway Cast of "Wicked"

Stephanie Torns (current 1st National Tour Ensemble & u/s for Elphaba) will be joining the Broadway cast of "Wicked" in February. It is currently unclear whether this is a promotion to lead or standby or whether she is remaining in the ensemble, but the latter is more likely, because Chelsea Krombach (Ensemble & u/s Elphaba on Broadway) is departing the show to understudy Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda - original Broadway Cast) in "Promises, Promises".

Exclusive Interview: Jenny Fellner

We are pleased to host an interview today with Broadway's brand new Nessarose, Ms. Jenny Fellner. Ms. Fellner has previously starred in "Mamma Mia!" and "All Shook Up". She offers some insight into performing as Nessarose below. We thank Jenny for kindly agreeing to this interview!

What was your first professional acting job, and how did you get it?
My first professional acting job was at a place called The Black Hills Playhouse, in Custer State Park, SD. It was literally a theatre in the woods, and we stayed in cabins. Once after a show the entire audience and crew couldn’t leave the theatre because there was a buffalo standing outside!!! I learned everything I know about acting and theatre from working there for five summers.

What is your favorite role that you've played, thus far?
Oooh…tough one! I like playing parts that differ from whatever I just got done playing. For instance, this summer I played Irving Berlin’s first wife, Dorothy, in Tin Pan Alley Rag. A sweet, fun-loving, tough cookie in a pink dress. Immediately after that I played Lizzie Borden, the supposed double-murderess. I enjoy it all.

We saw that you have toured with "All Shook Up" - what are the advantages and disadvantages of touring life?
There are so many of both! One advantage is that you don’t have to make your bed, clean your room, or buy toilet paper or wash your towels! A disadvantage is the burdens of constant air traveling. It’s dry on airplanes, the climate is always changing, airports have become much more difficult to get through, and for me I had my dog, so a lot of money and effort went into getting him around. We had such an amazing group of people on the All Shook Up tour, that it made the nine months on the road fly by! I look back and some of my fondest memories were on that tour.

Has it taken a lot of work to get adjusted to the wheelchair in rehearsals?
Much more so than I expected! I’m sore in weird places, and it’s difficult adjusting to the raked stage. It became so that just wheeling in a straight line was difficult! I think I’ve gotten the hang of it now, and actually have grown to love all my little wheelchairs, each in their own way!

How long have you been in rehearsal for the role? During your rehearsal period, do you rehearse all day, five days a week or just sporadically?
I’ve been in rehearsal since Tuesday, Dec. 29. Early on we rehearsed six days a week, but once I learned the role I’ve only gone in sporadically. I’ve been watching and trailing the show, which is a great help. Our two dance captains are absolutely amazing, and have happily given their time to help me in any way. I am endlessly appreciative for them!

From rehearsals, what is your favorite scene or song to perform?
Well, it’s tempting so say my big scene in Act II, the Governor’s Mansion, although that scene is also extremely emotional and painful! So I get to do the most in that scene, especially as far as singing goes, but part of me just loves wheeling around in Dancing Through Life, where everything’s happy!

How do you feel about your debut this week - excited, nervous, scared?
I feel all those things! Mostly excited I would say…and I love getting nervous! I am able to feed really well off of nerves, and in some ways it makes me focus even more. Just watching the show lately, has really made me excited to be a part of it.

Is there any other role in "Wicked" you could ever see yourself performing?
I used to think so…obviously there is so much wonderful material in both of the lead women’s roles, I spent time and effort trying to fit myself into one of them, all the while overlooking sweet little Nessarose! After all is said and done, this is the role that I fit, and I love every dimension of her. I will say this…I get a little bit jealous of Dr. Dillamond’s costume…

Outside of "Wicked", what are some dream roles for you?
Well, ever since I was a little girl I always wanted to play Annie. It never happened, and I never got over it! There are so many good roles out there…I’d kill to play Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion.

Have you ever seen/been involved in any funny onstage mishaps you'd like to share?
Once I was doing a play at the Irish Repertory Theatre. It was a Shaw play called The Devil’s Disciple, and as it was a period piece, the men wore these clip-on ponytails under their hats. I guess it was an accident waiting to happen…anyway, during the big courtroom scene one of the guys had to come running in and remove his hat. Well he came running in, took off his hat, and the ponytail flew off and landed in the middle of the courtroom. It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen, and IMPOSSIBLE to stop laughing!

What advice would you give to aspiring performers?
You know, the best advice I can give to aspiring performers is to show up, do the work, stay true to yourself, and don’t let anyone get you down!

Andy Karl Confirmed as Next Fiyero on Broadway

What was your first professional acting job, and how did you land it?

I would consider my first professional gig in Ft. Worth, Texas. I was Corie in Barefoot in the Park. I was still Non-Equity at the time, but it was the first non-community theater job I had. Since Texas is a Right-to-work State, you don't have to join the union to work at a Union theater. I didn't join Equity until I moved to NYC.

How did you come to audition for “Wicked” and what was the audition process like?
I auditioned for Wicked as a Glinda understudy, before the show was opened. Honestly, I did not understand what was happening in the scene for the audition (Cornfield/Fight Scene). After the show opened, I went in several times for both Glinda and Nessarose. My voice is much more suited for Glinda, but I went in everytime they wanted to see me. If the casting director sees you as a part of the Wicked family, they will find a place that is right for you. In my case, they just kept auditioning me for different slots until they found the right fit. I must have sang 14 times and danced 3 different times. I had a bit of difficulty learning the dance combo, so it wasn't until the third time that I nailed it! My final audition was for Stephen Oremus and Craig Burns of the casting office. I sang 16 bars with a high C. Got called back to dance, finally nailed it. Then got a call about an hour later that I would be joining the Broadway Company! My Wicked mantra is "Never give up"!

How long and how difficult was the initial rehearsal process for the show?
The standard rehearsal process for a new replacement in our show is 2 weeks. Keep in mind I was not a Glinda understudy right away. We started with fittings for shoes and costumes. Then came vocal rehearsals, and watching the show every night. Then came dancing/blocking. It was just me and the dance captain, Kristin Gorski in the rehearsal room for the entire 2 weeks. I didn't work with another actor, until the day before my put in. That was for 30 min to do lifts. I wasn't sure it would all work out. I ate and slept Wicked. It haunted my dreams! The Thursday before I was to make my Broadway debut on Tues, was my put in. The put-in is when you get to do the whole show with the entire ensemble. Once. You are in costume, acting and singing full out, and everyone else is in street clothes. Not that you are thinking about anything but doing all your stuff right. In retrospect, it is a very funny event!

What was your first show like? What emotions were running through you?

My first show in Wicked was 4 years ago! It was a complete out of body experience. I could not tell you how I felt. I do remember backstage right before the ballroom crossover, Ben Vereen came up to me and introduced himself. I don't remember anything else besides that! I was so busy thinking like a computer about what was next that I did not have time to take it all in.

What is your favorite costume in the ensemble and as Glinda?

My favorite costume in the ensemble is my One Short Day dress. I could do without my wobbly hat, though. I do believe that I got motion sickness from it once when I felt ill! The front flap just continually flaps in your face the entire time. Many people think that it was a broken hat. Nope, that is how it is supposed to be!

My favorite costume as Glinda is the Second Act Thank Goodness outfit. I feel so regal in it! Love the wig for that scene also and the cute little hat!

How was the initial rehearsal process for Glinda, and what was your first performance like?
I became a Glinda understudy when Megan Sikora, our Glinda understudy at the time, went away for the out of town tryout for Curtains. I learned the show rather quickly and started blocking with the Stage Manager. Once I was off-book, we started running the show with music--me and the Stage Manager up in the rehearsal room. The next step was an understudy rehearsal on the stage with the other understudies but focusing on the Glinda scenes. The next step was a full run through with the understudies which was to be a put in with costumes. That never happened! I had not yet run the show from start to finish with the other understudies, when I was called to go on. This was the Sunday before my Thursday put in. Glinda hurt her foot and the Standby was out. I was not nervous a bit. I felt very prepared with the songs and the lines due to the amount of homework I did. I was called to come in at noon before the 3pm show to run the technical bits of Glinda. I had no time to think of what a big deal it was, because there was so much to go over. Luckily, I trailed the Glinda the night before, so the backstage stuff was fresh in my mind. My dresser and hair person were invaluable to keeping me calm.

Do you have any onstage bloopers or mishaps you’ve been involved in or witnessed you’d like to share?

One onstage blooper that I will never forget. Once during the Ozdust Ballroom right before Madame Morrible comes out to give Glinda her training wand, one of the dancers lost her wig. It landed CENTER stage, Down near the conductor. Madame Morrible had to step over it to get to Glinda.

Also after the ballroom crossover, I walk dramatically offstage. It was very smoky that night with the fog. There is a moving tower that passes in front of me for the Wizard's Chamber scene. My new ballgown was so poofy and beautiful. Unfortunately, I misjudged how much space I had and got caught in the tower. I was being dragged onto the stage! Several stagehands had to cut me out of my dress very quickly. Sometimes you forget how dangerous our show is. So many things can Kill you! Thought for a moment that I was going to be the Wizard's little slave girl for the entire scene. That would have been a sight!

Which is more exhausting: all of the dancing and heavy singing of the ensemble or the intensive acting and singing of Glinda?

It seems that the dancing on that rake starts to take it's toll on your body. Your body should never be on a slant for that long of a time. Everything starts to go out of whack! The dancing takes its toll, but after several years, my body is so used to the expenditure. That is why they say you need to change up your exercise routines. Your body gets used to it. When I go on for Glinda the emotional drain is incredible. The singing is right in the pocket of what is comfortable for me. It is the emotional journey that exhausts me the most. You are fighting for so much as Glinda. Your loss of Boyfriend and Best friend are so great that it is hard as an actress to go through. Since our company has a Standby, the understudys rarely go on. We never seem to develop a stamina for the role. I give all out when I get the opportunity. You never know when it will be your last!

Are there any dream roles you’d like to play one day?

hmmm Dream roles. You mean besides Glinda? I would love to play Guenivere in Camelot. I would love to do more plays. Maria in West Side Story was always a Dream role...mostly because I would be dreaming if I thought I could get cast! Her journey is such a beautiful one. One that I would love to take. Unfortunately, I could not look less the part!

What advice would you give to aspiring performers?

Advice...I think it is imperative to be prepared. The sooner you prepare, the quicker your dreams will come true. If you need to learn to dance, do it. If you need to lose weight, do it. If you need to lose your accent, do it. If you need to save money, do it. If you need to research, do it. You have to be prepared when your chance comes or else you may miss it!

Exclusive Interview: Cristin Boyle

Today, we have an exclusive interview from Ms. Cristin Boyle, former ensemble member and understudy for Glinda in Chicago. If you saw the show with her in the ensemble, you would have heard her singing, "I hear some rebel animals are giving her food and shelter!" in "Thank Goodness". Check out this amazing interview below!

My first professional acting job was the in the ensemble for the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse's 2000 summer season. We did Evita, My Fair Lady, and Gypsy. It was the first professional audition I ever attended. I was too scared to go out and audition for summer stock when I was going to NYU. Sometimes when you are in school and you are constantly confronted with your own weaknesses, you forget that that doesn't mean you are a talentless, un-hireable disaster. So my sister shoved a copy of the Theatrical Index at me and told me to get over myself and two weeks later I walked into Merry-Go-Round's ensemble open call. I sang sixteen bars of "I Feel Pretty" and was called back. At the call back they asked me how high I sang and I said "high." They laughed. I was very green. I quickly became an audition junkie. I loved it.

My favorite jobs? Hard question. I think my favorite job would be doing The Game, a new musical version of Dangerous Liasons, at the Barrington Stage Company. It was a dream come true for me - one year out of school, working with Broadway veterans in the Berkshires on a new musical. The writers were in the room and custom tailored our dialogue and lyrics based on what we brought to the characters. The costumes were designed and built for us. I got to play Cecile (Uma Thurman's character in the Glenn Close version) It was an exciting environment to be in.

I auditioned for Wicked and the Glinda cover four times. The first was in the fall of 2003 before the show opened on Broadway for a last minute cover. I thought they were crazy for calling me in since I am 5'6" and brunette and Kristen is 4'11" and blonde. I got called again in the winter of 2005, but I was in Kansas City opening another show. In the fall of 2006 I was called in so the casting office could re - familiarize themselves with who they had in their Glinda files. After that I went in a month later for a spot, didn't get it, and then got called in in January of 2007. I went in on a Thursday or Friday, got called back on a Tuesday, got the job Tuesday evening and flew out to Chicago the next Monday. That's how slow and fast it is sometimes.

I had never stepped into an already running show and had never understudied before so I was intimidated. I didn't want to let anyone down or drastically change other actors' shows. The rehearsal process was fast. I learned the ensemble music and blocking in ten hours. I would go down to the rehearsal room and turn the monitor on during the show and do the show with the cast, but of course with no one else and just the tape on the floor for guidance. I really couldn't wait to go on. I learned quickly that that was the only way I would really learn my part - by just doing it. The Glinda material took multiple private rehearsals with the stage manager and the dance captain, and then understudy rehearsal with the other understudies.

I was very nervous for my first show. I kept thinking "Why am I so nervous? No one is looking at me in the ensemble." But that doesn't matter. And sometimes they are looking. You don't get to do the show in costume, with blinding lights, with sound and microphones, with fog, with bodies and full cast and crew until it is showtime! You have a bare bones put in - no lights, sound, or audience. And of course you don't want to mess up. I totally ran into people. I felt like a stranger - like I didn't belong. And I felt I was possibly fired. And then at the end of the night, one of the guys saw me and said, "Oh I forgot you were in tonight! You just slipped right in, didn't you?" It is amazing what you can feel on the inside and clearly not betray on the outside. Needless to say, I had a bunch of notes from the dance captain. He was kind.

I mentioned the rehearsing for Glinda earlier. As for the first performance... it felt surreal. Like I was watching myself from the outside. I wasn't really looking at other actors on stage. I just wanted to stand where I should and say and sing the right words. And maybe make people laugh, which can be hard at a thinly populated Wednesday matinee in February in Chicago. I recall Rondi Reed after asking how it felt and before I could respond, she said "Disembodied right?" Yes, that was it exactly.

My favorite scene in the ensemble might have been the opening. So much singing and crazy mob emotions, and I got to interact with so many other cast members on the stage. And I got to hit the Fiyero u/s with the ribbon. That was fun. As Glinda I had two favorite scenes. I LOVED the train station scene. Just really great dialogue. I also loved the final scene between Glinda and Elphaba. One of the best and most innocent qualities of Glinda (I have always thought) is that she truly thinks that she can just, poof, make things better and everything is fixed. In that last scene, Glinda truly grows up and takes on responsibility. It was also fun to say "Let the little girl go and that poor little dog, Dodo!"

On stage bloopers? Don't know what you're talking about. They never happen. Ever.
Oh, except for the time I got stuck in the bubble above the proscenium arch at the top of the show when I was on for Erin Mackey. Or the time Erin got stuck in the bubble. Or the time Kate Fahrner got stuck in the bubble. Or the time Annaleigh Ashford got stuck in the bubble. Bubble = Trouble. But seriously, I am guilty of one night singing "I hear A rebel animal is giving her food and shelter!" during Thanks Goodness. "A" rebel animal. Only one.

As for which is more exhausting, I really can't make the comparison - I don't think I ever got to that real comfort zone with Glinda like I got with my ensemble track. I don't think I ever had that sense of abandonment and relaxation that I achieved in the ensemble. Either way, though, eight shows a week can start to wear you down. I thought I would never take a sick day. Boy, was I was wrong.

Yeah, it is hard to go to sleep immediately after doing a show. So you go to bed later, and thus wake up later. I find you need a bit of extra sleep when doing a show - mostly to rest your voice and body. I had a routine. It was my own and it worked for me. I had stuff I did when I wasn't at the theater. A lot of my day revolved around scheduled dog walks and when I needed to be at the theater. And then we were at the theater six days a week. Sunday night was the beginning of the weekend and Monday was get stuff done/play day. Can you imagine a world where Mondays are the best day of the week? It does indeed exist.

Advice... hmmm... As for my own advice, I would say, if you are going to go for it, go for it! Don't hold back or do it half way. Don't let anything or anyone bring you down - you have to be resilient and believe in yourself! Don't let your survival job take over your auditioning. Work really, insanely hard, and in the right way. There are a lot of things you can do that seem like work but it is really busy work. You can show up for auditions - and as Woody Allen says, 80% is just showing up - but if you aren't also working on your craft, you will have nothing to show for in the audition room. Acting, performing, auditioning - it is all just doing your homework in front of people. I think the most successful actors are always working to refine their talents. I don't know if there is ever a point of perfection, but there can always be the action of working through something and finding deeper meaning and connection with the material. That, at least, has always kept me grounded on stage and in the audition room.

On a final note, acting can be considered a selfish profession, and at times, as an actor you have to focus on yourself to do your job. But I would also argue that it is selfless. Actors are constantly giving of themselves to others, and I think that is one reason why the theater community one of the most generous and welcoming communities out there. If you decided to join the acting community, you really couldn't surround yourself with a finer group of caring and creative people.

When was the first time you saw the show and what production?
January 6th, 2006, Broadway. It was Shoshana's 2nd to last show and she was out for both shows that day, I got to expereince the Wicked curse. I saw Saycon as my first Elphaba.

When was the last time you saw the show and what production?
June 28th, 2009 on Tour in Memphis with the 2nd National tour. Marcie as Elphaba!

Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?
Eden Espinosa, always and forever. She has the best acting ability for the role I have seen and I am in love with her voice, and not to mention her riffs!

Who is your favorite Glinda and why?
Megan Hilty. I have never seen a funnier Glinda and someone who also makes the perfect transition into act 2.

Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?
Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty. You can't even touch what they had and the real relationship they have in real life.

What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?
Sebastian Arcelus as Fiyero and Jenna Leigh Green as Nessarose. I have too many favorite ensemble members! I think the standouts were on the 1NT in fall 2008.

Who are some standout understudies you have seen?
Donna Vivino when she was the standby and Melissa Bohon as Glinda.
Who is the nicest person you have met at the stagedoor?
I cannot even choose one person. Some standouts are Eden Espinosa, Stephanie J. Block, Carmen Cusack, Megan Hilty, Jenna Leigh Green, Katie Rose Clarke, and Sebastian Arcelus.

What was your favorite time seeing the show?
Eden Espinosa's last on Broadway (10/8/06). I have never been to a more emotional show before, and it was also Eden's last show which was just perfect in every single way.

Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?
Spring Awakening, Next to Normal, Ragtime, Legally Blonde, The Wedding Singer, and Hair.

Which "Wicked" alumni/current cast member's work outside of "Wicked" do you admire most?

The producers of Sydney's production of "Wicked" have finally updated us on the cast situation - or as many have named it, the 2009 Australian Elphaba Crisis. Jemma Rix (standby for Elphaba) and Pippa Grandison (temporary Elphaba) will be sharing the role for January and February with Patrice Tipoki (former understudy) as standby for Elphaba. Amanda Harrison is apparently set to return.

Exclusive Interview: Carrie Manolakos

Today's exclusive interview is provided by Ms. Carrie Manolakos, the standby for Elphaba on the 2nd National Tour of "Wicked". She has previously been with "Mamma Mia" as Sophie on both the tour and on Broadway. She joined the 2nd National Tour when it opened in March of this year. We thank Carrie for her willingness to do this interview. Check it out below!

My first professional job as part of the union was Mamma Mia. I got that job right before my senior year of college. We had casting directors come in and teach audition workshops at NYU, and from there they called me to audition for Sophie. I got the job after a few auditions, and I went on tour for a year and a half. I finished up my degree during the summer of the following year.

The rehearsal process for me was mostly watching and retaining. Because we were in rehearsal in New York for 5 weeks before tech, and then had 2 weeks of tech, I had about 9 weeks of watching before I really got on my feet. And then I touched on each scene a few times, had a put in and had to be ready to go!

My first performance for Elphaba happened half way through the show. I was prepared to go on at Emerald City, but went on at intermssion. My first show was just act 2. I was definitely nervous, but I was ready. The following night, I did the whole show and was so excited to go on. I had so much fun. I have gone on in the middle of the first act as well. I had to remember to breathe because there is so much going on with trying to get green and get into costume as fast as possible.

[referring to her time in Mamma Mia!]: It's always a challenge going from one production of a show to another because each company is different. And as a performer I am used to specific things, as well as the actors I am onstage with. But that is also exciting to see other people choices and what they bring to their character. It's always a gift to see what a new performer brings out in you.

In all of my spare time backstage, I learned how to play the guitar and I started writing music on both guitar and Piano. It's always something I wanted to do, and now I had the time and the courage to start! I have loved doing that. :) I am hoping to record an album in the next year, too!

As far as dream roles go, Elphaba was always a dream role of mine. But as far as the future goes, I would really love to create a role and be a part of an original company. So I don't think I have that perfect role in mind yet, because the show may not be written! :)

We thank Carrie for this wonderful insight into her life as a standby for Elphaba, and we hope so see her someday promoted into the leading role!

Is It True...?: Wicked West End Casting

There are quite a few rumors circulating as to the casting of the West End Production of "Wicked" - set to change on 29th March 2010. The rumors (and nothing more - most of this is just heresy):

- All principal cast are set to leave, as well as Ashleigh Grey (Elphaba s/b).
- Sarah Earnshaw (Glinda s/b) will be staying through.
- Most ensemble will be leaving.
- Rachel Tucker will be Elphaba & Louise Dearman will be Glinda (this is VERY strongly rumored).

Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?
Kristy Cates-it is said one always loves one's first Elphaba, and I am no exception. Her singing is amazingly strong and her acting is so entertaining. She conveys mood so easily in her expressions and all of her body language.

Who is your favorite Glinda and why?

Stacie Morgain Lewis-she of course looks likes the perfect Glinda to me, being so petite and perfect, but one cannot ignore her beautiful singing and I always felt like she portrayed Glinda as someone who sincerely wanted to be good and was devastated to find it wasn't as simple as it seemed.

Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?

Kristy [Cates]/Stacie [Morgain Lewis] and Victoria [Matlock]/Christina [DeCicco].

What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?

Cliffton Hall as Fiyero, DeeDee Magno Hall and Summer Naomi Smart as Nessa, Telly Leung as Boq, Gene Weygandt as the Wizard, Rondi Reed as Madame Morrible, Steve Ewing as Chistery. Ensemble favorites: Mindy Reid, Jeremy Duvall, Sunny Yokohama, Casey Quinn, and Don Richard!

Zach Hanna as Boq, Donna Vivino before she was lead Elphaba, and Coleen Sexton as Elphaba.

I couldn't choose one, I've had so many great experiences! Kristy Cates, Brad Weinstock, Jeremy Duvall, Steve Ewing, Summer Naomi Smart, and Cliffton and DeeDee Hall, and I'm sure several others I'm forgetting right now!

What was your favorite time seeing the show?

Probably the second time...I had seen it the first time in Chicago from the balcony and the next night we won front-row lotto seats and Kristy/Stacie up close just dazzled me!

Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?

I don't live in a major theatre area, so I haven't seen many of these, but I like Chess, Evita, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Nunsense, Joseph, The Marvelous Wonderettes, and my most recent CD purchase was Gutenberg! the Musical.

Which "Wicked" alumni/current cast member's work outside of "Wicked" do you admire most?

Stephanie J. Block, who I got to see in Pirate Queen, and Kristy Cates, who I got to see in Unbeatable!

Editorial: Pippa Grandison and "Wicked" Australia

As some of the readers may be aware, Pippa Grandison played her first performance as Elphaba in "Wicked" Sydney last night. This was completely unannounced and was only confirmed by Lucy Durack (Glinda - Melbourne & Sydney) tweeting in congratulations. It is generally assumed that she has replaced vocally ill Amanda Harrison as lead Elphaba.

And thus, my editorial: WHAT THE HECK "Wicked" producers? I am not denying that Ms. Grandison is talented - I have never heard her or seen her in anything. But I do know that the producers have a very capable standby, Ms. Jemma Rix, who has been with the show since it opened in Melbourne in July 2008 and has been the lead in Melbourne/Sydney for all intensive purposes since April. Ms. Harrison has probably played about thirty performances since April, with Ms. Rix, Zoe Gertz (current u/s for Elphaba), Patrice Tipoki (former u/s for Elphaba; current s/b for Elphaba along with Jemma Rix), Carmen Cusack (former 1NT US Elphaba), and Jennifer DiNoia (current Broadway s/b Elphaba) all having to fill in for her. Ms. Rix has done a vast majority of these performances, and the producers overlooked her. I feel that this is completely unfair to Jemma Rix (as is the fact that she was surrogate lead for six months with NO credit). Yes, I'm aware life isn't fair and that Pippa Grandison does have more of a name, but when one has functioned as lead for six months, with zero credit, the title should go to them.

Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?
StephanieJ. Block. She was my second Elphaba and I was truly impressed not only by her immense voice, but also by how much she seemed to just be consumed with the character. Everything she did was in character and I greatly appreciated that she was able to incorporate Margaret Hamilton's portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West (especially in her speaking voice) while still making Elphaba her own character.

Who is your favorite Glinda and why?
Jennifer Laura Thompson. Hands down she is the best actress I've seen in the role. Jennifer made Glinda very much her own, which I find especially admirable since she was the first to take over after Kristin Chenoweth and audiences were definitely hoping to see more of a carbon copy than an entirely new character. Jennifer made her Glinda smart and somewhat conniving, but she also was earnest and genuinely funny. One of the things I most love about Jennifer's performance is that she knew not to make Glinda a caricature of herself just for the sake of laughs, but was still able to crack the audience up with her excellent comedic timing. Jennifer's Glinda went through a true transformation from her entrance as Galinda during "Dear Old Shiz" to her closing "Glinda, the Good" during the finale and the transformation never felt forced or phony because of how well she was able to depict the nuances of character growth throughout the show.

Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?
I believe I would have to go with Stephanie J. Block and Annaleigh Ashford who seemed to love being with each other and really shone together. Stephanie brought out more sincerity in Annaleigh than I think she had with other Elphabas and Annaleigh seemed to bring out a more comfortable looseness in Stephanie.

What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?
Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible was deliciously evil. She hadperhaps the best portrayal of the character. My other favorite principal is Michelle Federer as Nessarose. She had all the necessary pain of the character and added some subtle touches of arrogance and controlling nature in the first act which made her transition into the Wicked Witch of the East all the more believable in the second act.

Who are some standout understudies you have seen?
Technically she was a standby but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Jennifer DiNoia when I saw the Chicago production. She had been with the role for a good few years by then but you would never be able to tell thanks to how fresh her performance was.

Who is the nicest person you have met at the stagedoor?
Sadly I have yet to visit the stage door for Wicked, having only recently worked up the confidence to do so this past summer for some of the shows that came through Pittsburgh.

What was your favorite time seeing the show?
The third time I saw the show which was my first time seeing it in Chicago. It had been over two years since I had seen it last and it was wonderful to be experiencing it again, especially with the exuberant cast of Jennifer DiNoia, Annaleigh Ashford, Gene Weygandt, etc.

Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?
Rent, Les Miserables, The Secret Garden, High Fidelity, In My Life, Billy Elliot, Jesus Christ Superstar, Into the Woods, and Ragtime top my list, more or less in that order.

Which "Wicked" alumni/current cast member's work outside of "Wicked" do you admire most?
Jennifer Laura Thompson. She is my favorite Broadway actress thanks to her performances which are often moving as well as hilarious. I look forward to seeing her make a full return to performing, especially in new works where she can originate a character. And just to throw this out there, I think she'd make a great Mrs. Wilkinson in Billy Elliot or Diana in Next to Normal :)

Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?
It's a tie between Julia Murney and Merideth Kaye Clark. Julia, because she was my first, and she had the acting and the vocals down that night that I saw her. I have seen Merideth six times now, and her acting is really great for a standby. Her voice is perfection too.

Who is your favorite Glinda and why? Honestly, I would have to say Chandra Schwartz. Since I first saw her in Cleveland on November 18th, I have really grown to like her portrayal. At first, I hated her. I mean hated her. Now, I have seen improvements in her acting, her singing, and her stage presence.

Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?
Kendra Kassebaum /Julia Murney. I don't honestly know what it is about them, but when I saw them, it seemed as though they were best friends in the end, and that really struck a nerve in me.

What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?
Well, my favorite Fiyero would have to be Sebastian Arcelus. Nessa, probably Dee Dee Magno Hall. One person in the ensemble that has stood out for me would have to be Stephanie Torns. Dying to see her as Elphie, but I probably never will. There is still hope that she will go on in the few days the run is still here in Cleveland...

Is it True...?: Katie Rose Clarke

There is a fairly widespread rumor floating around that Katie Rose Clarke (Glinda - 1NT) will be replacing Erin Mackey (Glinda - Broadway, Chicago; Swing - 1NT) on Broadway on January 18, 2010. This is unconfirmed by anyone's standards, but I have from a good source that it was being planned for her to return to the tour three months after leaving (meaning around November) and then taking it to Broadway three months later (meaning around February). Said source told me that the touring contract fell through but that the Broadway was still in the works, but not confirmed.

That being said, who knows if it's true, but my duty is just to tell you what I've heard, and that's what I've heard.

Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?
That is a question that I find very difficult to answer! Each Elphaba I have seen I have grown to love and appreciate in many different ways. However, as seeing Dee's performance is most recent, I would have to say her. She delivers her lines very straight forward with no remorse, and I like that. Her vocals are very clean and clear, and she seems to love what she does. (hint: she's been with the show since '06!)

Who is your favorite Glinda and why?

My favorite Glinda would have to be Laura Woyasz. This girl seriously needs to be promoted. She is a mix of some of my favorite Glinda's (such as Megan Hilty, Kendra Kassebaum, Annaleigh Ashford, etc) and she is so spontaneous. The way she delivers her lines have you totally under her spell. Not to mention that her vocals are beyond better than I myself have witnessed.

Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?
I believe that Marcie and Helene truly have the best chemistry. They are roommates and when the curtain goes down after every show, they do this really cute dance. It's one of those things that you have to witness to be mesmorised like I was.

What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?
Stephanie Torns! My God have you heard her?! For some reason, Wicked and it's fans seem to LOVE women in the show with this name (Stephanie J. Block). She is the understudy Elphaba on the 1st Tour and she is seriously the next big thing!

Who are some standout understudies you have seen?
I've never really have seen an understudy besides Samantha Zack as the Witch's Mother, but I'm not sure that counts?

Who is the nicest person you have met at the stagedoor?
Oh gosh they are all so nice! Kristine Reese was definitely the nicest Wicked cast member I have had the pleasure to meet. She came right over to us and stayed their for about 20 minutes. She asked me what school I went to, where I lived, and asked if she could sign stuff. Funny story, my father was actually holding the camera upside down to take the picture and she went up to him and said, "uh um, sir"

What was your favorite time seeing the show?
Oh of course my first! There is nothing else like going to your first Wicked show! Wicked on Broadway was hands down the best show I have seen! However, seeing it with the people I love and live for the first time in Pittsburgh, it honestly trumps everything else.

Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?
Hands down the Color Purple and Legally Blonde. Without question. The Color Purple is such a beautiful show that allows everyone's true colors to shine through, and it left me flabberfghasted and begging for more! Just like Wicked and Legally Blonde, it has a "HAHA TAKE THIS!" moment (like "Defying Gravity" and "So Much Better") and the cast members were so very nice. Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?

It's a tie between Idina Menzel and Lisa Brescia. Idina is the embodiment of Elphaba to me. The voice, awkwardness, vulnerability, and fierceness add up to near perfection. Lisa's Elphaba is the one that touched my heart the most because she brought so much depth and light to the character. If I had to choose just one, I'd choose Idina,

Who is your favorite Glinda and why?

Kristin Chenoweth. Her beautiful voice, seemingly effortless comic timing, and powerful performance was a pure joy to watch. She is the embodiment of Glinda to me.

Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?

Idina and Kristin by a landslide. Their chemistry was the most magical thing I've witnessed in Wicked.

What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?

Katie Rose Clarke is the best Glinda I've seen in terms of acting. She's so gifted. I had the pleasure of seeing the full OBC and they were all incredible and are still my favorite cast. Some others are Kate Reinders as Glinda, Rondi Reed and Alma Cuervo as Madame Morrible, Lenny Wolpe and Lee Wilkof as the Wizard, Deedee Magno Hall and Jenna Leigh Green as Nessarose. Some ensemble members who stood out are Kathy Deitch, Sara Jean Ford, Celisse Henderson, and Cristin Boyle.

Who are some standout understudies you have seen?

Laura Bell Bundy as Glinda; Lisa Brescia, Eden Espinosa (even though I only her her in Act 2) as Elphaba.

Who is the nicest person you have met at the stagedoor?

They were all gracious, but Lisa Brescia really stood out to me because she seemed more genuinely appreciative than anyone else. Her kindness meant so much to me.

What was your favorite time seeing the show?

My first time. Everything was fresh and new to me.

Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?

next to normal, The Light in the Piazza, Hairspray.

Which "Wicked" alumni/current cast member's work outside of "Wicked" do you admire most?

Idina Menzel. I love her three CDs, I've been to two of her concerts, and I think she's an excellent songwriter.

Alyssa C. is the subject of this, our second fan interview. She has seen the show six times (with a seventh time in March 2010) between Broadway and the Tour, but she has seen a wide variety of people in the show between August 2004 and March 2009. Read this Connecticut native's interview below!

Who is your favorite Elphaba and why?
It would have to be a tie between Lisa Brescia and Nicole Parker. I have seen both of them live and each just touched me so deeply with their portrayal of such a misunderstood, passionate woman. Lisa has a clean, lovely voice and her acting choices were very much spot-on. Nicole's greatest strength is in her acting choices and the expression of emotions (her eyes told the story.) Also, getting to meet both ladies after the show was an extra treat!

Who is your favorite Glinda and why?
Jennifer Laura Thompson. She was my first (and second) Glinda and will always be the most special to me. She played the role with just the right amount of subtlety and comedic timing. It was one of the many things I admired about her!

Which Elphie/Glinda pair do you think has the best chemistry?
Honestly, each pairing has been so uniquely different. It is what keeps the magic alive for this show. However, if I truly had to decide, it would be between Carmen Cusack/Katie Rose Clarke and Julia Murney/Kendra Kassebaum.

What other standouts have you seen in other principal roles? What about ensemble?
Joey McIntyre as Fiyero was a personal favorite. I also very much enjoyed Deedee Magno Hall as Nessarose. David Garrison and PJ Benjamin are my favorites in the role of the Wizard. I have also had the pleasure of seeing Carole Shelley twice as Madame Morrible.

Who are some standout understudies you have seen?
The only understudy I have seen was when Michael DeVries was on for the Wizard.

Who is the nicest person you have met at the stagedoor?
I have met so many wonderful and gracious people at my experiences with Wicked. But, hands down, Nicole Parker gets the vote here. Truly the most patient and giving soul when it comes to the fans!

What was your favorite time seeing the show?
March 2009. I saw Nicole Parker and Alli Mauzey and not only did they give a great performance, they were such dolls after the show as well. Also, this particular day was the day my dream came true: I got to stand on the stage at the Gershwin Thearte! It was the most magical, moving experience getting to stand up there and talk for a few minutes with Nicole. I truly appreciate and love everyone involved in this show!

Other than Wicked, what are some of your favorite shows?
While it is not technically Broadway, I am a big fan of the “Cirque du Soleil” shows. I saw one of their shows called Alegria over the summer and it was just fabulous. The performers are amazing and can move their bodies in ways unimaginable! I will be seeing another show called Wintuk this December at Madison Square Garden and I cannot wait!

Which "Wicked" alumni/current cast member's work outside of "Wicked" do you admire most?
Stephanie J Block. She has proven to be a true star in just about everything she does (be it theatre or her solo CD.) I got to meet her back in 2007 at Pirate Queen, and she was so genuine and kind!

We are proud to post our first exclusive "Wicked" cast member interview - with Ms. Stephanie Torns, who is in the ensemble and understudies Elphaba on the 1st National Tour of "Wicked". If you see the first national tour and she's not playing Elphaba, you'll hear her singing "No one cries they won't return" in "No One Mourns the Wicked" and "I hear that she can shed her skin as easily as a snake!" in "Thank Goodness!" We appreciate Stephanie being kind enough to give us this interview and wish her the best in performances to come!

What was your first professional acting job, and how did you land it?
-My first professional acting job out of college was "The Producers" in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

How did you come to audition for “Wicked” and what was the audition process like?
-Well I know from talking with others, that everyones story on this is COMPLETELY different, but for me I went in a total of five times within one year and just performed the Elphaba material over and over again. The fifth audition was a dance audition as well to see if I can do the ensemble movement..and an hour later I got the call! :)

How long and how difficult was the initial rehearsal process for the show?
-It was a total of about two and a half weeks. It was a bit strange for me because I've never joined a show that's been up and running already, so when you learn the show it's just you by yourself with the dance captain. So it was a little scary in the sense that you just have to really know your numbers on the stage so you don't cause any problems with the show. Then I had my dress rehearsal which is called a "put in" and its you and the entire company running the show but only you are in costume and everyone else is in street clothes. Then I went on that night!

What was your first show like? How were you feeling throughout the show - nervous, excited, scared?
-My first show was extremelyyyyy scary/fun/and wonderful all at the same time! It went actually really smoothly, and nothing terrible happened so it was a check plus in my book! :)

What is your favorite costume in the ensemble and as Elphaba?
-Hmmmm my favorite costume for my ensemble track is my Ozdust ballroom black and white dress! For Elphaba, it's definitely the second act dress it's just soooo unbelievably beautiful.

How was the initial rehearsal process for Elphaba, and what was your first performance like?
-Well once I was put into the show for my ensemble track, we immediately started the Elphaba material. Rehearsal process for this was very fun and ALOT of information thrown at you to learn. My first performance on was in Appleton, Wisconsin and it was a complete outer body experience!! But my family was out there so I knew they would be proud no matter what! :) Of course every show after that I am able to enjoy myself out there and not be as nervous!

What is your favorite song or scene to perform in the ensemble and as Elphaba, and why?
-My favorite song to sing in the ensemble is the opening of the show because it's just such a wonderful way to bring the audience into the story of what just happened. My favorite scene is either Dancing Through Life or Ozdust because we get to have so much fun up there and enjoy one another. For Elphaba my favorite song to sing is Defying Gravity because it's the climax of the show for her and the lyrics are just so moving to me. My favorite scene has got to be the cat fight scene!! It shows both women in different ways, because it has strength and laughter all at once.

Do you have any onstage bloopers or mishaps you’ve been involved in or witnessed you’d like to share?
-Oh my. Well there are A LOT of things that happen sometimes, but I would say its ALWAYS funny to see someone wipe out in the opening. I've done it twice and so have many other people.

Which is more exhausting: all of the dancing and heavy singing of the ensemble or the intensive acting and singing of Elphaba?
-Well both are very demanding, but I would have to say going on as Elphaba. I think I've gotten use to my ensemble track by now, so my body and voice just have adjusted. I don't get to go on as Elphaba as often so when I do, I think my adrenaline kicks my butt a bit! ;)

Are there any dream roles you’d like to play one day?
-Well truth be told, ever since high school, I've always wanted to play Elphaba one day. It was truly my dream role! It still hasn't actually hit me that I get to do my dream, but it is a wonderful feeling that I am extremely thankful for! :)

What advice would you give to aspiring performers?
-Never give up. This business is a lot of rejection, and you just have to believe in yourself and your dreams and just learn from all of your experiences. I'm a true believe that everything happens for a reason!

This one shall be a quickie, but here are my thoughts on the whole Adam Lambert (former Fiyero u/s on the 1st National Tour and Los Angeles productions).

Adam Lambert is with no doubt an incredibly talented performer; he has an amazing voice and he has stage presence like few others. I have enjoyed just about everything he sung, with the exception of "Ring of Fire" on American Idol and the stunt he pulled earlier this week which led to Lambertgate.

Quite frankly, I feel that what he did was completely and totally inappropriate, for several reasons. For one, just because it's been done for years on TV does not make it appropriate. The shock factor he wanted was totally there, so it's clearly not common. Secondly, he knew it was inappropriate when he didn't do any of it in dress rehearsal, thus putting ABC in an incredibly difficult position of having someone doing things onstage that is not conducive to their family station. And the fact that it was 7:45 in the west when he was doing it makes it even worse. Do any of you really want to explain to a small child why that man was putting someone else's head in his crotch and moving back and forth? I don't think so... And yes, I also agree with ABC canceling his appearance later this week. He compromised the values of their station; he has to deal with it.

Do I think it'll ruin his career? Absolutely not. But was it stupid? Yes. He's talented, but even the talented have to show limits, something which he utterly failed to do.

Editorial: Respectful Critisicm vs. Bashing

I thought I'd write an article on another issue that seems to be rather important within the "Wicked" community - respectful criticism vs. bashing. When critiquing a performance, one should not be expected to be all sunshine and rainbows - it actually makes a review better if it can see both good and bad in any give production. That being said, it is most certainly not a good thing when a review is filled with, "OMG that girl who played Elphaba sucked so terrible I hope she never plays it again..."

Many people need to learn to express dislike respectfully. If you truly think she sucked, say something along the lines of, "I did not care for so-and-so's interpretation of Elphaba at all - I thought it was pretty awful BECAUSE..." The word "because" is also very important - if you're going to say something, at LEAST back it up. I feel that that is the difference between constructive, respectful criticism and bashing. Always remember that the actor or actress who you are reviewing may read what you said - and they're much more likely to take offense at bashing than constructive criticism.

Closely related, when somebody criticizes your favorite actor in the role, don't jump down his or her throat. Everybody is entitled to his or her opinion; not that there's anything wrong with saying you disagree, but getting into a "No, I think so-and-so is miles ahead of what's her face" is just silly and proves absolutely nothing: it's an opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

I think if we all learned how to be respectful when reviewing a show, it would make the world of "Wicked" a much better place.

Remember that time in London when Cassidy Janson (Ensemble; u/s Elphaba & later s/b Elphaba) was on as a flathead in "One Short Day" and fell over and just rolled around the stage? Idina Menzel (Elphaba) and Helen Dallimore (Glinda) started laughing so hard they had to stop the show to pick up Ms. Janson and to allow Ms. Menzel & Ms. Dallimore to compose themselves.

Exploring Oz: Trivia on Glinda's Costumes

This is just some various trivia about Glinda's costumes that you may or may not know...

- There have been three different designs for the Bubble Dress: the original (such as what Kristin Chenoweth wore), which had a less sequined top and a flatter bottom; the second one (designed as a more flattering approach for Glindas who were not as small; the bottom puffed out more and the top was more curvy); and the latest one, which was very similar to number two, except the bottom puffed out even more and the bottom was made out of an even shinier material. The three designs are shown right here, in order:

- The actress playing Glinda wears her shoes for the Shiz scenes while in the opening of the show because she has to change clothes & wig in thirty seconds for the next scene.

- The other costumes have also had changes throughout the run, though none as significant as the bubble dress.

- The Glinda wig for shiz was originally straight, but then they changed it to curly, and now they have once again returned to straight, though it has a different twist to it now. Pictures are below:

- Glinda actually has two different wands: one for the bubble and one for the catfight.

Wicked to Return to Chicago

According to a post on the popular "Wicked" fansite WitchesofOz, "Wicked" will be returning to Chicago for nine weeks because ticket sales were still good upon closing; it will not be at the Oriental Theatre but it will be somewhere in Chicago.

Exploring Oz: Vocabulary

It was brought to my attention a couple of days ago that a lot of people, particularly newcomers to the world of theatre may not understand some of the terms that we use on this site and in the "Wicked" world in general. So this morning, I have compiled a list of terms that might be helpful. If anyone has any other suggestions for terms to add, please feel free to comment or email me (address located in the right hand column).

standby - a person who sits backstage/stays very close to the theatre during the show and only performs if the lead who they cover is ill or away for some reason. In all productions of "Wicked", Elphaba has a standby and in several of them, so does Glinda.

understudy/cover - a person who has a part in the show (usually the ensemble) but can step into a leading part if it is needed.

swing - a person who sits backstage unless a member of the ensemble is absent or stepping into a leading role; they usually cover six or seven ensemble roles. Sometimes, swings also cover a principal role.

super swing - a swing who floats between the four US productions of "Wicked", filling in as needed. One current example would be Brenda Hamilton.

phoning in - when an actor/actress does not seem as if they are actually putting forth an effort when playing a part; commonly occurs when someone has been in a role for a very long time.

lift call - a call to practice the parts of the show where characters lift other characters while dancing ("Dancing Through Life" in "Wicked"). This is very important because if an understudy/swing is being lifted and has not practiced with the person who is lifting them, injury could easily occur.

places call - exactly what the name says; a call for actors, actresses, and crew to go to the position where they start an act.

sit-down - an open-ended production of the show in a city; examples have been Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco currently. New York's production technically would be but is not usually referred to as such.

cherry picker - in the world of "Wicked", this is the machine that takes Elphaba into the air in "Defying Gravity".

stage door - to fans of "Wicked", may be used as a noun or verb. As a noun, it is the place where actors and actresses enter and leave the building and greet fans after the show. As a verb, it is used to describe visiting the door.

This is an audio slideshow (from March 2009) of the 1st National Touring Cast of "Wicked" visiting the Ronald McDonald House in Salt Lake City. They make crafts, perform, and just hang out with the children in the house. There is also a short clip of Lesley McKinnel (Swing; u/s Nessarose, Midwife) singing "Over the Rainbow". What a sweet outreach for the cast to provide!

Editorial: Why Don't Standbys and Understudies Get Promoted?

Today’s editorial will be on a question which fans of “Wicked” commonly wonder: why do the producers of “Wicked” not promote very many standbys and understudies into leading parts? After all, they’re tested in the role and “deserve” the leading roles after understudying it for a long time. So why don’t they get it? Well, to answer this question, one really has to be in the mind of the people who cast the show: clearly, we are not. However, we can make educated guesses on the logic behind their decisions.

I feel that the main point is that standbys and understudies are cast as exactly that - standbys and understudies. Even if we as fans don’t see it, and even if we feel that Julie Reiber (standby for Elphaba in Los Angeles & Broadway) is the best thing since sliced bread, there has to be some reason that she was cast as a standby and not as the lead position – in this case, no doubt the experience of Eden Espinosa (standby Elphaba/Nessarose on Broadway; Elphaba on 1^st National Tour [temporary], Broadway, Los Angeles) sealed the nail on that coffin. Does it mean Eden is better than Julie? No, that’s a subjective decision: and honestly, we don’t even know if the producers think so: They could be going with her proven ability to lead a show (in both “Wicked” and “Brooklyn” on Broadway) over sheer talent. We never really know.

Closely related to that point, just to touch on the whole method of thinking that a standby or understudy “deserves” a part, one must honestly remember that the world isn’t fair – and also the fact that they do not have a guaranteed promotion clause in their contracts. Don’t get me wrong, I feel that many have been overlooked who really did deserve a leading role, but that’s really not up to us to decide.

Money also sometimes plays a part in the decision of who may lead a part. I know for a fact from people involved with the show that Laura Bell Bundy (standby for Glinda on Broadway; later played Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde” on Broadway and Tour) was offered the role of Glinda after Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda – Original Broadway Cast) but demanded the same amount of money as Chenoweth and ended up breaking the contract. However, we often do not know about money in the situations (and it’s really none of our business), so I’m sure that may be fairly common behind the scenes.

We also are not guaranteed that all standbys and understudies want to be promoted. While I do not know specifically whether or not she wanted to be promoted, Lisa Brescia (standby for Elphaba on Broadway; Elphaba in Chicago) was working on a degree in Womens’ Studies while backstage at The Gershwin and may have not accepted offers to be promoted until the Chicago stint. Once again, we will most likely never know.

Finally, I think name is important to “Wicked” producers, especially with the Broadway Cast. Look at all of the Broadway cast replacements: they had either had a good bit of New York theatrical experience or were very familiar within the “Wicked” world – Shoshana Bean (had done “Hairspray”, “Godspell”, toured with “Leader of the Pack”); Eden Espinosa (led “Brooklyn” on Broadway); Ana Gasteyer (of Saturday Night Live fame); Julia Murney (“The Wild Party” on Broadway; National Tour of “Wicked” as Elphaba); Stephanie J. Block (“The Pirate Queen”; “The Boy from Oz”; National Tour of “Wicked” as Elphaba; original Elphaba in “Wicked” workshops); Kerry Ellis (“Wicked” imported from London); Marcie Dodd (toured with “Hairspray”; toured in ensemble and as Elphaba and Nessarose understudy with “Wicked”; Nessarose in Los Angeles “Wicked”; standby for Elphaba in Los Angeles “Wicked”); Nicole Parker (MadTV); Dee Roscioli (2 ½ years with the Chicago company of “Wicked”, two of which were spent playing Elphaba full-time). Everyone of these women had shown a capacity to lead a show (or were a publicity stunt) and thus were given the leading role. I would go through and do the Glindas as well, but I think it’s fairly self-explanatory.

One other quick factor; especially for smaller roles: if an understudy is a swing, I feel that the production is much less likely to move them up simply because swings are so versatile and so difficult to train, as they have to learn 9-10 roles in the show: the one exception I know of with a swing promotion was Briana Yacavone to Nessarose in Los Angeles, and that was kind of done on an emergency basis with Caissie Levy’s vocal troubles. I do feel that being a swing can be a bad thing if you want to be promoted.

All of this being said, I still think that we fans must remember overall that it is the producer’s decision to promote people as they please, and though we may search for logic in their decisions, the only way to know for sure is to be them, and we are not.

Jared Zirilli joined the 1st National Touring Cast of "Wicked" on October 9, 2009 as an Ensemble Member and understudy for Fiyero. Click here to view his website, which not only contains pictures, a biography, etc., but also clips of him in rehearsal for Fiyero. You can hear him singing "Dancing Through Life" and "As Long As You're Mine" with Merideth Kaye Clark. What a voice! I wouldn't mind seeing him on the board as Fiyero when I see the show in New Orleans.

Tom McGowan to Join San Francisco Cast of "Wicked"

According to David de Vries' (Dr. Dillamond; 2nd National Tour; Chicago) blog, in December, Tom McGowan (The Wizard) will be leaving the 2nd National Touring Cast to join the San Francisco Cast of the show. He will be the third actor to play The Wizard in San Francisco, succeeding Lee Wilkoff and David Garrison. No replacement for the 2nd National Tour has been announced as of now.

Clearning Confusion: Wicked 1st National Tour

With the help of a reliable source, I am posting now to clear some confusion about the 1st National Tour of "Wicked".

The reason for this confusion is the fact that Donna Vivino's (Elphaba) site originally listed her as being with the tour through November 1, 2009. Clearly, she is still with it. She rescinded this statement once things had changed, but unfortunately some people still misunderstood and thought it meant she was leaving soon. According to my source, Donna Vivino will be with the tour AT LEAST through April 11, 2010 in New Orleans, as will Chandra Lee Schwartz (Glinda).

Another rumor that started was that Katie Rose Clarke (former 1st Ntl. Tour Glinda) would be returning in December 2009. This is incorrect; she was going to return but the contract fell through. Whether or not the other part of the rumor is true (that she would replace Erin Mackey (Broadway Glinda) in February 2010) is unclear at the moment.

It is also worth noting that many ensemble contracts also expire in April 2009 at the end of the New Orleans stop.

Hope this helps clear any confusion, and remember that any of this is subject to change, but as soon as we know here, you'll know.
